Abstract

This article examines the use of symbolism and metaphor in the poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, arguing that Faiz’s metaphoric language serves a dual purpose: on one level, to evoke traditional themes of love, longing, and separation; on another, to express socio political critique, hope, resistance, and collective aspiration. Through close reading of selected poems from different phases of his oeuvre — including romantic ghazals and revolutionary nazms — the study reveals how recurring motifs such as dawn, night, cages, wine, and beloved transpose their meanings across personal and political registers. The analysis demonstrates that Faiz reinterprets classical symbols to reflect postcolonial realities, social injustices, and human resilience. The findings suggest that understanding Faiz’s symbolic repertoire is essential for appreciating not only his aesthetic genius but also his enduring relevance in contemporary socio-political discourse.
